November 14, 2006Timing belt on my 2001 just failed 40,000 miles short of recommended service interval. Has anyone heard of this being an issue with the PT?
November 14, 2006That is early. The book says 120k but people have been changing them around 90k. Anything get screwed up on your engine?
November 14, 2006Don't know yet.. called Chrysler but they wouldn't help. Towed it to a mechanic that I can trust..not the dealer. They are going to put a new one on tomarrow and we will see. I was going less than 20 with low RPM so I hope that there wasn't any damage.
November 15, 2006Bummer. I understand there's a newer belt tensioner, and water pump usually gets replaced while you have things apart.
Hope valves are okay...
December 16, 2006Mine failed @ 69K...I was lucky, I was cover by a 100K powertrain warranty.
December 16, 2006Is it an interference engine? Just like to know for when I need it done.
December 16, 2006Yes an No after it brakes dont try to start it.
December 17, 2006So when it breaks, it won't hurt anything (maybe) but it will after?
My wife would never realize what happened if it did and I'm sure she would try to start it. How hard is it to change yourself. Maybe I'll do that for safetysake at 100,000. Of course thats' probably 3-4 years away from now.
December 17, 2006If you are up there in the mileage I am not sure that I would wait. I have look at a lot of places on the web and it sounds that there are a lot of PT Owners with this same problem. There has to be a reason that Chrystler moved to a new design for the replacement part for the 2001 belt tentioner.
Makes me wonder why most manafactures recommend timeing belt changes at 65 but they are advising 120 for the P. Is there something special about thier belts? I doubt it... Knowing what I know now I would have done the replacement at 65 thousand. Would have saved myself 2000 dollars for the valves ETC. Went ahead and upgraded to the new tentioner as well.
Fibers in the belt were torn at different places along a 4 inch section of the belt. Otherwise the rest of the belt looked normal. No cracking or any other marks.
December 17, 2006That's interesting that the belt looked normal other than a 4" section. What could have caused that? Should look pretty much the same all the way around shouldn't it.
So you had to do valves too? Did you fix it yourself or have a shop do it. Dealer or independent?
Right now mine only has 30 K on it.
